I never tested that but I'm sure it would sink if the combo is attached!

G'day SF

Good to hear that you're getting the hang of things :)

One of the other things that you will discover is that 'good' tripods a) cost more than cheapies, and b) they are worth their weight in gold when it comes to stability

While there are many types of materials used to make tripod legs, aluminium tubes are most common. My tripod is made by Vanguard and cost me well over $200 before buying a head to go on top of it - taking its overall cost towards the $300 mark

Others here will spend 2x ot 3x my costs as their pockets are deeper &/or their needs are different

The big thing with any tripod is stability - no vibration in the breeze; no vibration when you press the shutter button; along with size-shape-weight which are all issues each of us has to balance when looking for something to buy

Hope this helps

As Phil stated, these features are most important and they weighted
heavily in my choices for on location tripods.

One other feature — I wasn't aware of — was stealing me some critical
sharpness quality and that was torsion. I always was hesitant to pay top
money on high end tripods until I discovered that torsion thing.

Had I been in Canada when I took the decision to go for it I would have
chosen an Algonquin tripod but I was in Europe so I went for the Gitzos.

Absolutely. I bought my one initially to mount my camcorder to video me playing guitar. Never really gave much thought to using it for photography as I'm more of a 'shoot n scoot' guy. Now that its there and I have played around with it with my camera I'm seeing the benefits. Definitely moved up on my 'list of things to buy'...

I could assume that the focused image is from the better tripod... mind dropping some brand names?

G'day sf

The chain store cheapie box was labelled "Professional quality tripod suitable for all photography".  There are no markings on the actual tripod.

The other one is my Vanguard (dunno a model number) with a 'good' ball head from B&H usa - all up costing over $A300

ps- the 'cheapie' now is used to hold a small flashgun and slave receiver when doing studio-type photo work  :)

Hope this helps

Thanks for the response, guys. I ordered a Rollei earlier (the C5i), more in line with my current budget.

Good luck with it, the great advantage
is that your gear it not heavy.

Wow! What a good sharpness! I hope I also have a good camera. I can't say my opinion about the sharpness but I'm impressed. I'm a beginner at taking photos. I hope reading to this and other replies will help me.
