Thank you so much! I have been debating on a 50mm lens. I'm very impressed and your explanation of lighting was fantastic and it makes much more sense now. It looks like I need to invest in a flash also. lol Thanks again!

Nice episode and shots EXCEPT for the lens flare that showed all over the model's hair above her eyes where sun was hitting the lens that didn't have a len's hood. Ruined many of the shots for me.

hi Mark,
your videos are as usual very informative.
i just need to ask as when we are using 50 mm our camera is close to the subject as is on camera flash.
that makes subject face very white.
how we can control that ?
regards.
Aditya

This is a great post as always .I have a 35mm 1.4 on my 7d .With the crop body it is a 51 mm 1.4 and on my 5d it is a wide angle 35mm .I kinda get the best of both worlds full body and half body portraits .Answer to the question about the nifty fifty .. Nothing can touch it in terms of price range, but the build quality is very cheap. The nifty has a pretty wide (fast) aperture, but it's AF performance isn't great in low light. Low light performance is determined mainly by aperture and AF performance. There are plenty of other lenses that outperform the nifty in low light, but not in the same price range. :judge:

PhotographyTalk wrote: So most of you have either a 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 sitting in your camera bags some where. In this video Mark does an outdoor portrait shoot with a 50mm lens with flash and a very shallow depth of field. In this he covers in detail not only high speed flash sync, but also shooting in manual mode as well as manual focus. At the end you witness some pretty nice portrait shots b eing taken.

Enjoy:
