Kelly, we never thought we were going to make it, but the spiral staircase has rails on both sides and we took it real slooow. When we started out there was no one around, it was much harder coming down with other people coming up. For the next few days my wife kept saying how she couldn't believe she made it, especially with her bum knee.

Yup.  Going down is always more strain.  These days, when we attempt stairs, my wife and I have to wait for a break in the traffic.
