Quick Release Recommendation Wanted

12 years 5 months ago #179790 by rdtagman
The camera is a Canon rebel XSi and I just ordered the Canon 70-200/2.8 (I opted for better glass now - camera upgrade down the road). I have a tripod that Noah used to take pictures of the flock on the boat (35+ years old) but it is still very serviceable and I will upgrade down the road. The tripod has 1/4" male stud for camera/lens mounting. Without breaking the bank, what quick release system would you recommend that would be adequate for my equipment. I'm 99% certain that the 70-200 will be the largest lens I will ever purchase for the hobby. I'll need one base and three mounting plates (nomenclature??) - one each for camera, 70-200 lens and video camera.

Thanks for your help.

I use a manfrotto ballhead, but my tripod uses a 3/8" threaded center. I'm not overly familiar with what heads will mate on the 1/4" (i'm sure there are plenty out there). The only thing I'm curious of is, why not just pick up a used Slik, Manfrotto, etc....For the price of the lens that you just bought, I would be reluctant to mount my camera up to it. You can usually find tripods used on flea-bay or craigs for right around $150 (sometimes less). Just my .02........

edit: I just found on amazon that manfrotto makes a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter. This way you can buy a nice head and still use it when you upgrade the legs..

Thanks John. The old tripod came from K-Mart back when they had the 'Focal" line. I bought by Minolta 35 from them as well and Minolta had a different model number sold only by K-Mart. The tripod is a brick, with crank up center and tilt head...just too heavy for today's standard. Thanks for the rec on Manfrotto. The 1/4" & 3/8" options is what has me puzzled and caused me to ask you folks for help.
Thanks....and I'm open to other ideas as well.

If it were me, I would either buy a new "quality" tripod that doesnt break the bank (Manfrotto, Slik, etc) and start shooting. If you are confident that your tripod will handle the 70-200 2.8 and not dump you new lens into the ground, then just buy the 1/4 to 3/8 adapter plate and a 3/8 ball head. Then upgrade the legs later. Dig around on your local craigslist or check out KEH.com.
