I need help choosing a tripod and accessories!!! Overwhelmed!!!

12 years 11 months ago #88625 by laloggia
I started looking on line tonight for a tripod and possibly a ball head. I also would like to get a quick release bracket. Im so overwhelmed by all that is out there. I do have I tripod that is ok. It's an old Sakar that my dad used. I m not in love with it, but can use it if I can get a ball head and quick release for it. Then I can work on getting a new tripod later if need be.

Are most brands of tripods and accessories universally fitting with other brands? Or do I have to go with a 'set'? I have a modest budget.

What materials are best?I want light in weight, but again, am on a modest budget. Then twist lock legs? flip lock legs? so many options. I mostly do nature photography and macro stuff.

Any help would be great, so I can start narrowing down the field here. Some of the stuff looks kinda complicated to use too. Im thinking the more simple the better.

Thank you so much in advance for your help and advice.

I'd use the legs you have unless something is wrong with them. Good legs will run you about $200.

While I replied to your other thread, I see you mentioned a QR plate here. The cheapest Manfrotto makes is this:

... it can hold a very heavy camera.

Matthew :)

PS the "micro" table top mentioned in your other thread will hold more than those Sakar legs will.

I'm sorry did I miss what sort of budget you were looking to spend?

I have a Bogen/Manfrotto 3021 tripod and a 3055 ballhead with the QR that works quite well. I have had this set up for almost twenty years and so it is durable

Yep, Manfrotto (once known as Bogen in the USA due to the distributor) costs a little more than most, but the build quality makes up for it. They should last forever, and you can buy "parts" if ever needed.

Bogen (now Manfrotto) handles a lot of high end equipment, including Gitzo tripods. Anything under their new label is worth a bit extra:

Genus is something new (to me). Seems they make tools for the still camera videographer.
