1.    For the digital photographer ready to step across the gap between the compact and a true DSLR, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Digital Camera is the solid bridge to a grander and wider photography experience.

2.    Introduced during late 2011, the SX40 is designed to look and feel like a DSLR in your hands. Immediately noticeable is the 2.7-inch Vari-Angle LCD screen that swings from the back nearly 180 degrees. You can then tilt the screen on an approximately 270-degree arc. This exceptional viewing versatility allows you to compose more of the creative images you see in your head, and some you’ve never imagined. Unlike like many variable-angle screens, the SX40’s is not hindered when using a tripod. Put yourself in a group photo or create self-portraits by turning the screen to face forward.

3.    The Wow factor continues with the PowerShot SX40’s rather amazing 35x optical lens that delivers a focal range from 24mm to 840mm. This is a capability that simply can’t be matched on a DSLR without buying thousands of dollars in lenses. The lens technology on the SX40 is even more versatile, as you can change from a wide angle to tightly composed telephoto framing very quickly, so you don’t miss anything happening in your world.

4.    Canon has made it easier for the less-experienced photographer to benefit from the SX40’s enormous focal-length range with a hefty body and Canon’s newest advances in image stabilization (IS) technology. Without these capabilities, it would almost be impossible to achieve sharp handheld images at the longest focal length of 840mm. The IS system in this camera automatically determines which stabilization mode best matches the still photos and video you are shooting. IS for stills includes Normal, Panning, Macro (Hybrid) and Tripod; for video, Dynamic, Powered, Macro and Tripod modes.

5.    Typically, when shooting at a long telephoto focal length, it’s a challenge for amateur photographers to hold a camera steady and following a subject that is moving. The PowerShot SX40 makes it no challenge at all, with its Zoom Framing Assist feature. Whenever you’re tight on an action subject that keeps moving off the frame, simply hold the Zoom Framing Assist function button until you see a wider angle of view. Then, you can find your subject and frame it as you wish. Remove your finger from the button and the lens resumes the tighter telephoto focal length. It maintains focus on the subject, so you can capture exciting close-ups of any action.

6.    The “HS” in the full name of the PowerShot SX40 is its high-speed designation, which is driven by Canon’s DIGIC 5 Image Processor. The combination of the camera’s 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and top-shelf processor creates photos and video that start to rival the performance of many DSLRs.

7.    The DIGIC Image Processor adds more wow to all the images it records because there is much less digital noise, even in low light conditions at high ISO speeds.

8.    The processor’s i-Contrast technology selects the best balance of light and dark segments of an image, giving it the high quality contrast that is the hallmark of professional photography.

9.    The powerful processor in the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS keeps the wow coming with its high-speed Burst HQ capability. Set it for a maximum burst of 8 frames and still shoot full-resolution images. Shoot video at a high speed, so incredible action footage can be viewed in slow motion.

10.The DIGIC 5 processor has plenty of juice remaining to power Canon’s new Multi-Area White Balance system. Instead of reading the average light on an image, this system reviews more than one segment of an image and modifies the white balance for each separately.

11.The sensor and processor in the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS also puts wow in your moviemaking. You have the choice of 1080p Full-HD video with stereo sound at 24fps or 720p HD video at 30fps.
