i just inherited a Ricoh 35 mm film camera and all the F-stop stuff confuses me. Help.

Hey, Nikky. Yes, F-stop stuff can be confusing. The easiest thing to remember is: the larger the number, the smaller the aperature (the opening in the lens), and the greater the depth of field.

It'll make more sense as you learn more.

Cameron's right as far as he goes but you probably still have questions.

Aperature controls the depth of field in an image. A lens can only really focus on a single point, so everything in front of and in back of that point will show some degree of blurriness. The farther away from the focal point, the more blur. You have some control over the blurriness by stopping down the lens (that is using a larger F-stop number). It can be frustrating to learn, I know. Try the following website for a great, in depth article.

There is a concept called hyperfocal distance. it means that your lens is open wide enough for the foreground to be sharp and everything beyond it to infinity is in focus. this technique works well in landscape photography with f stops starting around f 16 and beyond . if you have depth of field preview on your camera you can use that to determine what is in focus in the shot before you take it
