Can I only use Canon brand batteries in my Canon SLR?

Hi. This may be a silly question, but I just got a Canon SLR for Christmas. Do I need to use Canon brand batteries or will any brand do?

You can use 3rd party batteries designed for your camera. I'd stick with Canon though.

As scotty mentions there are several 3 party brands that work fine. I have used them and can't tell the difference.Iif I were a betting man I might even suggest they were made by the same manufacturer in the same factory as is the case with many brands of alkaline batteries.

I'd recommend staying with Canon for everything. Canon isn't responsible for any malfunctions, damages or injuries caused by non-Canon genuine lithium-ion batteris.

I've read about those problems, but haven't seen or heard of them happening to anyone I know.

Keep in mind that all batteries aren't created equal. The one I got from Canon is 1390 mAh. One I bought is 1800 mAh & I've seen even higher rated ones. I've shot an all day v-ball tournament with the 1800 mAh battery & didn't need the back-up battery. (This was with the LCD display turned off.)

A couple things:
When the charger first shows full, it's not. It's a good idea to leave it on for a half hour or so more.
Lithium batteries deteriorate even when they sit in the warehouse before sale. Useful total life may be between 2-3 years only after manufacture. So be careful who you buy them from.
Don't forget that the battery also runs your focus & IS, etc. One persons 1,000 shot life may be electrically equivalent to anothers 300 with a different lens.

My recommendation? Definitely stay with Canon. And be careful. There are counterfeit Canon lithium-ion batteries and chargers out there, usually for sale on the internet, and there have been a lot of reports about these counterfiets causing battery ruptures. Buy your supplies from a reputable supplier.

Saw a report on an internet site saying the counterfeits were more a problem in Japan and overseas that her, but you can't be too careful. I agree. Stay with Canon. Genuine Canon lithium-ion batteries have security labels on their packagin that identify them as genuine Canon products.
