It's Nikon's RAW format. Can be opened with Nikon's software, iPhoto, Aperture, Ps and Lr (and others). I use Lightroom (Lr) for mine.

It's the best quality format for both shooting and archiving. Must be exported as JPEG, a lower quality, for web or printing though.

Didi you install the Nikon software ViewNX? If not you need to install it and you will see the NEF files. There is limited work you can do with it as well in it.

Just FYI. As a sample of RAW format suffixes, Picasa supports these:
Adobe (.DNG)
Canon (.CRW, .CR2)
Casio (.RAW)
Fuji (.RAF)
Hasselblad (.3FR)
Kodak (.DCR, .KDC)
Leica (.DNG and .RAW)
Minolta (.MRW)
Nikon (.NEF, .NRW)
Olympus (.ORF)
Panasonic (.RAW, .RW2)
Pentax (.PEF)
Ricoh (.DNG)
Samsung (.DNG)
Sigma (.X3F)
Sony (.SRF,.SR2)
The software that comes with your camera is specifically designed to handle the RAW your model creates. As manufacturers develop new RAW formats, software will need to be updated.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

As it was said, NEF is Nikon raw format. I'm trying to figure out, why would you have NEF, when I thought you shoot with a Canon? Did you buy a Nikon? I remember you talking about buying a 2nd body and it was mention it would be best to buy the 2nd body of the same brand you already have.
