my question would be what story you are trying to tell with them you have to be able to tie them to some local story for them to print them. Like the photo of the gator at the lake that people said there was no gator there.

That is nice to know, but scarman is right. Pictures have to tell a story. Not just your story, but A STORY. Anyone should be able to look at your pictures and see a story.

A story in pictures can be held within one single picture or in 5-10 pictures.

Pictures that tell a story, that have a chance of being in a newspaper has to answer the questions...
Who
What
Where
Why

Can you write a story to go with the pix? that has a much better chance of publication than just a pic or three. We used to run a photo each week called "eyesore of the week" regarding an abandoned or messy property that just ran the location and a caption. So unless the paper runs a pic of the day or week you need to write a short story on how the park is a good/nice place to come to during the winter time.

From my understanding that is how one submits photos to newspapers. There has to be at least a caption that answers the four ?s

When I was taking my course with NYIP, there was an assigment with taking pictures that tell a story. I also had to submit a caption to the picture answering Who, What, Where, Why. As if I was sending it into the newspaper.

Newspapers have alot to print and they're not going to worry about some person who submitted pictures of a lake and a duck...unless there is a story. Like the duck died in the lake due to an oil spill.

Our local newspaper has a photo file section. They encourage people to submit pictures and they display them on their webpage and run an occasional one in the print edition.

If submitting for a story, yes there has to be a story. If submitting because you think other members of the community might enjoy them, all you need is a location and a good picture.

That's pretty cool. Always nice to push community to come together.

Our newspaper doesn't do that, but our newstation does. One can submit the photos via the newstation website. The photo may be picked to be shown at the end of the news cast. My FIL has asked why don't I submit my photos. So I looked into it, when submitting one's photos, the newstation owns all copyrights of the photograph. I am not willing to give up my copyright just so it can maybe get view on TV and get no kind of money.
