Check out tele-converters at any photo dealer. They go between the camera body and the lens and multiple the focal length. You do lose a bit of light with them but they can be handy. A 300mm lens on a Nikon (APS-size sensor) acts like a 450mm due to sensor size. A 2x tele-converter multiples that by 2 (a 1.4x by that amount) so your 300 now acts like a 900mm.
Like I said, you do lose some light and have to open your aperture some but it is a worthwhile tool to get "closer" at a reasonable cost. Depending on the light, you may also have to manually focus.
The model mentioned is a top quality one that runs about $500 list. There are cheaper ones (as low as $100-$130) but you lose a bit of quality.
I shoot eagles with a 70-300 (check my photos) and work my way close. Whne that's not possible, I have a 2x.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Luckywish1 if you really just want to take photos of eagles/birds (actually one of the hardest things to photograph, but that's OK.

I'd get a D7000 (for the AF) a 300 f/4 and a x1.7 extender (the x2 doesn't add that much more length and takes another 1/2 stop of light away from you).
