ISO?

What is ISO?
I got a Nikon D40 that was my cousin's and there is no manual.
What does the ISO stand for? and what does it do?

ISO is the "film speed." The numbers an equivalent to film speeds. Higher ISO's are more light sensitive and so allow for greater shutter speed, but tend to produce a noisier less detailed image.

ISO is the International Organization for Standardization. You can actually find ISO-xxxx designations on all kinds of things especially in technical settings.

Oh alright. So like when using actual film, we would be 200, 400 speed film. ISO is just the digital side right?

You got it! It's one of my favorite aspects of a digital camera...you always have all the film speeds loaded in you camera.

That's awesome! Years ago I had a point and shoot film camera and I hated switching different speed film, but of course had to use up what was in the camera first.

now you can switch speeds in each individual shot if you need/want to by changing the ISO setting. Tthat is one of the advantages of digital.

Greek for "equal"

:)

I gotta LOL at you film guys and your ASA and such. Solstar seems so excited to have "film speeds loaded in you camera" Heh ehe :p :)

I started photography straight into digital (I'd used film cameras of course, I just didn't get into photography back in the 1990s or before) so to me having selectable ISO isn't a big deal. Fun to see you old guys getting excited though. :p

Do any digitals go below 100? Like the old ISO 64 film. I wonder why.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Canon goes down to 50 iso, but it's not native to the sensor, it's done in software.
