I know I would probably learn more, even about the simple things if I had the manual. But what does each of these letters stand for, that are on my camera?
M
S
A
P

Manual, Shutter priority, Aperture priority and Program mode.
Check the Nikon site for a download of the manual in pdf format.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

M A P S is what you use to find P L A C E S :p

M = full manual (you select the Aperture and the Shutter speed)
A = you select the f/stops (aperture) and the camera does the Shutter speed.
P = Auto mode, but you can change ISO and some other settings, sorta like "Semi auto"
S = You select the shutter speed and the camera selects the aperture

If you have Auto ISO on, then the camera will try and select the right ISO too (even in M mode). Just FYI.

Good explanation. The manual tells you the HOW to control those things.
