How do you get starburst effect in photos?

I'm experimenting with cool effects and noticed some photos with starburst. Can this be done out of camera of is this the work of Photoshop? I thought these starburst effects were done using a flash, but all my attempts show no starburst. Do you know how this can be done?

:thx2:

No. You'll need a starburst (or star) filter.

Yes, it could be added in PP, one supposes, but a filter is probably less expensive (compare to time) and faster.

Thank you. How is the Tiffen brand of filters? So far they are the only one I can find.

:thx:

I don't have an opinion on brand. I'd start by reading comments on Amazon. Most of these are fairly inexpensive; if you buy from someplace reputable you can always return it if the quality is unacceptable.

Depending on the image and the point of light, you can get a starburst effect by stopping down the lens. Most starbursts are created this way and not with filters. If you don't want to buy a filter, shoot through a piece of window screen. It will give you a starburst also.

This is correct. Shoot at f/16-22 depending on your lenses minimum aperture and the edges of the aperture blades will cause this effect. Depending on the number of blades the more star points you'll get.

F/22 does the trick like shadow and adrian have stated. Don't waste a money on a filter, they end up looking cheap and cheesy.

Very cool. I'd only seen this done a long, long time ago with a filter. Good info.
