motorsports?

How do I take pictures of motorsports? Like a racing car, I imagine I want a higher shutter correct? I heard about panning, but what exactly is it? Do I need to use it to photograph a fast car or bike? Or is panning another term for zooming?

Yes. Use a fast shutter speed to "stop" the action. Too fast of a shutter, however, can "stop" the action but not give the impression of speed.

Using a bit slower shutter speed can help show the speed.
If your camera is stationary, your subject will be blurred giving the impression of speed. This is a lesser used technique but quite effective.
The "panning" you refer to is moving the camera to keep up with the subject. Then the subject is more likely to be in focus while the background is blurred.

Shooting from a distance with a telephoto lens reduces the impact of movement but also reduces that "speed blur".

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Yes you want a faster shutter speed. Panning is when you move the camera with the subject that is moving.

Remember that a slower shutter speed when you are panning will show the wheels as a blur also. That will help show speed.
