Auto can help in many situations. I have found that out.

I will often keep mine set to auto when walking about. That way, I can get a quick shot if need be, then change to another mode to try to get a better shot. At least then I get one capture.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Whenever you feel like it is my guess. My D300 has a couple of Auto settings like Auto ISO and White Balance but, I have never used them. Then there are the Semi-Auto modes of Program,ShutterSpeed and, Apeture of those I will ocassionally use Aperture but, not often.

It is okay to use auto whenever it's convenient, and isn't causing any problems.

I like auto white balance. I always shoot raw, so I can adjust wb to my taste in processing if the camera doesn't get it right. I like auto-focus. In most situations it does a better job than I can, particularly with the small viewfinders on most DSLRs.

The problem with auto is when you are shooting in a situation that fools the auto mode, and you can't easily correct the mistakes it makes. For instance all the auto exposure modes (everything except M) rely on the light meter. The light meter normally tries to make things middle gray tone. For scenes that have fairly even amounts of light and dark this works pretty well. For scenes that are mostly light or mostly dark it might not be so good.

IMO the big problem with auto modes are that they tend to make you think you can't learn to operate the camera manually. Take some time to learn how the meter works, and what aperture, shutter, and ISO do and how they all work together for exposure. It's easier than you think.
