I, personally, love the bokeh. And the composition. And the fact that the stalk is not entering in the corner of the image.

At the risk of repeating myself: it's too dark. The tones are in the mid-to-black range, with very little in the upper mids. The lack of definition in the shadows of the head bothers me; I should be able to discern all of the detail therein (IMO). As is, it's just black and detail is lost.

A really good image provides detail in the shadows, and in the highlights (unless there's nothing there in the first place). By providing that detail you encourage your viewer to look closer and harder (cue Rafiki), to tarry. Isn't that what you want?

G'day Jeff

I like it 'as is' as a slightly contrasty, well exposed example of a seed pod

I also take Gary's thoughts in mind ... but I fall back on my film-days sayings of 'expose for the highlights and let the shadows look after themselves' ... meaning that blown highlights distract much more than 'dead' blacks. It may be that 'yes' with some of today's sensors & RAW shooting, it may be possible to lower the dynamic range to show it all, but as it is, I like it that way

I'd be happy with it as a 12" x 16" on the office wall

Well, no, we can't recover blown highlights, but we can also do better now. And I wasn't talking about the exposure, I was referring to post processing. Which I think has gone too far.

As for the exposure, there are pixels in that image sitting at 255, full-out white. And there are a significant number at 0, full black. Which means the image wasn't processed well. I'm willing to bet that the image wasn't shot with blown highlights, and the original probably has plenty of detail. My challenge is to do better. And it's possible to maintain a high level of contrastiness (is that a word?) without losing detail.

Then again, maybe this is precisely what Jeff intended. I'm only offering my opinion, right?

Hi Gary

All's okay ... and you make a lot of sense to my way of thinking
