60D vs 7D

13 years 4 months ago #10836 by Richmorrisphotography
Hi All

I am looking to upgrade my camera and am unsure which one to buy. I have narrowed the options down to either the Canon EOS 60D or the EOS 7D. Both have their own good points and I wanted to get your thoughts on these 2 cameras?

Thanks for your help.

I don't own a 60D, but have used one a couple of times, just to check it out. I have a couple of 1D Mark III's and a 7D.

You don't mention what type of photography that you like to do, or how much use your cameras get.

The differences that I noticed between the 7D and the 60D:
The 60D has a 9 point focus system (like the 40D) where the 7D has the 19 point focus system
The 7D does a better job of noise reduction at higher iso's
The 7D has higher frames per second (fps) capability (8 versus 5.3)
The 7D has a more substantial feel to it
The 7D has dust and weather resistant qualities (it is not water proof)
7D's shutter life span is advertised as 150,000 "clicks"
The 7D has dual processors - The 60D has one
The variable angle lcd on the 60D is really nice when shooting video

The 60D is a big improvement over the 50D and a really nice consumer camera body. I would not hesitate to purchase one. The 7D is geared to be a "prosumer" camera body and meets that need nicely.

The $600.00 price difference is a factor and obviously a personal and wallet choice.

That's a debatable point depending on what you need:

The 50D pros:
Faster FPS (6.5 vs 5.3)
Metal Body
Exposure Compensation button
Sensor cleaning
Micro-AF adjust (why Canon left this out of the 60D has me scratching my head)

The 60D pros:
A slightly better screen that can flip out
Can do movies...
Slightly better IQ
Built in flash controller
More exposure compensation (though, where's the dedicated button?!)
Better Auto ISO controls

That said, if I shot Canon and had to choose, I'd go 7D all the way.

I have the 7D and love it... I really wanted to upgrade from my Rebel..and at the time I was looking at the 50D and 7D. A guy who I had just met at a camera club had both of them....which he let me look at both of them, try them out.....and that's when I decided on the 7D and i'm so glad I did.

60d was a step backwards in the XXd line. The 7d was a home run.

Go 7d.

Go 7D and never look back. Its worth the price of admision just for the Auto Focus system.
