Canon Rebel having focus and sharpness issues

12 years 9 months ago #114334 by Moe
I have been noticing if I leave the camera alone, auto focus shows good, but later when I view on larger computer monitor the image isn't as sharp as I would like it to be. Is there a way to adjust the auto focus on these things?

Focus may have shown good on something not your subject. All it needs is something with contrast to focus on. Also, your lens may not be as sharp as you think it is. A prime lens will show you what your camera is capable of.

Moe - As Rob mentioned, there are several reason your focus might be "soft". Your profile says you have a Canon Rebel. Is that the original 6mp model or a newer model? It does not mention lenses. Show us an example and include EXIF data (ISO, f/stop, shutter speed, etc.). It could be too slow for he given light to get a sharp focus. Depending on your model, you have various numbers of focus points. If you are using all of them and your subject is not in the majority, you could be focused on something else.
Set your camera on a tripod or solid surface and shoot an object. Post that picture and let us have a look. Make sure your lens is clean.

Ignore that man behind the curtain. :nunu:

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I found that when I messed up & had my autofocus using all 7 focal points. The auto focus confused what i was tryin to focus on so my image came out soft where I wanted it to be sharp.

In any of the basic zones you can change the AI Focus mode to [AI Servo AF] This will let your motion shots stay in focus. Using the [AI Focus AF] is good for a mixture of action & less dynamic subjects. One Shot AF locks in the focus setting, once the shutter release button is pressed halfway.

You can set your focus points manually as well by doing the following...
look through the view finder & press the AF point selection button on the back of the camera:agree: , then either use the cross keys or the main dial to select the zone you want to use. (Selected zones will appear red & unselected zones will be black) You can also press the set button to switch back 7 forth between the center autofocus point & the auto selection.

I have a Canon Rebel XT & an XTi & they function this way...I hope it helps answer your question.
