Battery drain with Canon 580ex ii flash?

7 years 10 months ago #484585 by Jennifer Krueger
I just picked a Canon 580ex ii from an eBay seller.  The problem is that there seems to be some sort of battery drainage happening.  I could put new batteries in today. And in a couple days with out any use, the batteries are dead.  The unit is turned off.

I have one 580ex ii already, so I know how to use it.  Just don't know about this.

Can you help me please?

I would have a Canon repair shop take a look at it.  If you know 100% you hare shutting it down and it keeps draining the battery over and over again.  It could be anything.

I have a 580EXII (brought new a few years ago) and I left it in the camera bag for a few months (without batteries in it) as I wasn't using it much...went to use it, brand new batteries and...nothing...will not turn on at all...

Only been used about 10 times...what a waste of $900NZ

It's now a very expensive paper weight!

Until you can get a Canon repair facility to look at it, I'd just remove the batteries after each use. The flash shouldn't be acting that way. How long have you had it ? Maybe return it to the seller for a refund ?

Had it maybe 8 years...

Brought it with the 40D a long time ago but hardly ever used it.

Been in the camera bag (in it's own case) for maybe 9 months (with batteries out), and went to use it and it just wouldn't power up no matter what batteries I used, including brand new ones...

Even if I did return it to Canon, it's way past warranty now, despite probably only 1-2 months worth of actual use...

Still seems odd it would drain batteries that fast.

Maybee I'm a bit too cautious - but I always remove the batteries when the flash is not in use..... Reason: Years ago I once needed my flash for the first time since several months - and found out the batteries had been leaking. end of flash - and beginning of a new habit! :rolleyes
