Looking for a good telephoto lens

I have a Canon 50d with 85mm lens. I am looking for a good telephoto lens. Not something too big, but a good walk around lens. Anyone have any suggestions?

Katie - I love my Canon 70-300 IS zoom. Plenty of reach for wildlife and lots of my best were taken with it. For a short period, I had a 70-300 without IS as an emergency fill-in and still got great shots (it was a bit lighter).
This was taken with the non-IS model.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Katie,
Your question is just so open ended that it is hard for me to give you a recommendation (or my opinion)

What do you like to photograph?
What kinds of things are you hoping to photograph with the telephoto?
Do you have a budget ... amount that you can spend?

bhowdy has it right....You need to be more specific in your request. Are you looking for a zoom ? or a fixed focal length prime lens...What's your budget?...How fast of a lens are you wanting? (the faster the lens, the higher the price & the bigger/heavier the lens)

I'm pretty happy with my Canon 70-300. I upgraded to this lens from the 55-250, and it's noticeably better. Note that this isn't the same as the Canon 75-300, which isn't very well-liked at all. If you're on a tight budget, I'd pick the 55-250 over the 75-300.

All of these shots were done with the 70-300, and most of these were, too .

The 28-135 IS is a pretty decent all-rounder. Not terribly pricey, compentent image quality image stabilized. It won't quite compare to the 85 (which I also have and love) but it is much more flexible.
