Canon Lens Review: Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM

12 years 10 months ago - 11 years 3 months ago #95729 by PhotographyTalk
What a lens this beast is! Shown in this video 'Gordon Laing' does a stand up job showing you all the bells and whistles to this i ncredible lens made by Canon . Gordon shows you both still photos as well as video that are shot though this lens.

Enjoy:

Always a favorite of motor sports, wildlife and nature shooters, the relatively lightweight 500mm lens now adds Image Stabilization for an unbeatable package of handling and sharpness. Fluorite and UD-glass--a combination available from no other lens manufacturer--provide great performance, even with the EF 1.4x II or 2x II tele extender attached. It focuses down to less than 15 feet (4.5m), and offers the same weather-resistant design and incredible AF speed as its 300mm, 400mm and 600mm siblings.

Check out what owners of this lens are saying HERE.

First of all, thanks for the review Gordon, excellent review of what looks like an excellent lens. Secondly, and this is the part that worries me, is that is has woken me up to the very high video quality available from newer Canon bodies, especially in combination with the fantastic lens range Canon has. I fear expensive upgrade times lie ahead.........

I am really glad to be able to get information on the lenses. Nothing worse than to purchase a lense and find out that it won't be used as much as I had hoped for. Thank you

I've used canon's 300 f/2.8, 400 f/2.8 and this lens mentioned here. They're all top notch, and are a dream to use.

Ahhhhhh... something to add to my "If I win the lotto list". Anyone know where I can find a good patron? :judge:

Why exactly would someone living in the U.S. pay $13,755.00 (US) for this lens when it is $10,500.00 here in the states at B&H and Adorama? The "Japan Quality" is also confusing .... since they are all made in Japan. Additionally the model bought overseas would not have a U.S. honored warranty.

Of course if you live somewhere other than North America maybe this information = a good deal.
