External harddrive

I'm thinking of buying an external harddrive. It'll be my first one, so I'm not sure what brand to buy. Could someone point me in the right direction for a good external?

Get a double enclosure and a couple bare drives. Then you can mirror one and never lose your backups.

Enclosures are cheap and 2TB drives have come way down in price. Seagate, Western Digital & etc. are all fine.

Search for the best deals here, taking Matthew`s advise will save you some money if you know what to do, but stick to the firms you know..... www.dealighted.com/all check out the firms here..... www.resellerratings.com/
There are 'Desktop' which needs an electrical connection and USB which you just plug into your USB
port. The 'Desktop' are usually much bigger in GB`s.
Goodluck.

Having usb would be nice, I know I can just plug those in. Desktop I have no idea what to do with those.

It comes with an electical connector plus a USB plug that goes into your USB port where as the USB
external drive has only the USB plug.
check your 'pm'

I use a SATA dock (just google it for lots of options) and Western Digital Green Caviar SATA drives. I've never had problems with them, although since they just keep getting cheaper I replace them every few years. The dock plugs into the computer, and the hard drives plug into the dock. You can get docks that hold one drive or multiple drives.

I'll second that opinion. I use a similar setup also with Western Digital Green Caviar drives. It works well.

I have a WD plus another in a fireproof safe. I also have a smaller Simpletech USB powered for backups on the road.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

If you are going to backup from your computer then get any 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive. Those do not require external power they run off the USB port.

If you want to do photo backup on the road then recommend the PicPac-II.

Is that the same drive they put in their exterior set ups?
