Question about shutting off computer or keeping it left on at night?

While here can someone answer is it better to shut a computer off at night or OK to keep the computer on. If kept on the hard drive will spin every so often vs shutting it off and turning it back on puts load on the computers resources.

Which is better for the computers life span?

On a mac (and I assume PC) it will go into sleep mode after a while. Which shuts down all the non essential stuff. It should be fine.

However, if I'm not going to be using the computer till the next morning or I'm not running some process overnight, I always shut it down overnight. Just to save a little power.

:agree: Also cleans up "electronic litter" that can slow down operations. Not as bad as it once was, but sort of like formatting your memory cards.
All our electronic gadgets left in standby mode eat a lot of kilowatts.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Makes no difference. It does save power to shut it off. However if you leave it on you should shut it down about once a week. An advantage of leaving it on is that you can schedule maintenance during the early hours of the morning so you are not inconvenienced by virus scans etc. I leave mine on almost all the time, but I do shut off my monitor, which makes no sense at all.

A computer tech told me that if you leave a computer on all night you should re boot it once a day. In my opinion that would not be much different as far as strain on the computer compared to shutting down and restarting.
