Completely draining your batteries down

12 years 8 months ago #138745 by Ziggy
You know they say draining your batteries completely down before recharging is better for the life of the battery, I'm just wondering how are you all running your batteries down? I'll shoot my camera till it shuts off or will leave the camera when the battery is low, just so I can get every last bit of juice drained from the battery. Kind of a pain sometimes. But I have always thought this was the best method to get maximum life from your batteries.

This was important with Nickel Cadium (NiCad) batteries as they would develop a memory of short term use if they were recharged early. With the newer batteries this is less of a problem. I tend to use the battery until it is exhausted then pop in the spare. That is mostly from habit rather than necessity.

I agree, Charles - unless I am headed out on a lengthy shoot with no way to recharge, then I charge them anyway.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Its just become a habit of mine to run batteries down before recharging, but I do have spares so never without power.

I wouldn't. I think it might wear a modern battery out faster rather than make it last longer.
