Data recovery from computer hard drive failure?

13 years 2 months ago #32397 by Homer
My hard drive that stores all my photos has failed, and I have tried everything and was told my next option would be some sort of data recovery program.

The drive won't respond at all, so I'm not really sure what options I truly have. All I know is that I have thousands of photos on there that I would be disappointed if I lost.

Any help would be really appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I have nightmares about this very event!

In 1990 I was supporting Pennzoil in Houston. Their newest hard drive failed and the backup turned out to be just a copy of the directory - no data files. The information lost was data from a geology survey and would cost over a million dollars to recreate. We bought another identical drive and broke into the hermetically sealed compartment and replaced the disks with the ones containing the data. It worked for this particular problem but the expense was several thousands of dollars. Contact your local computer repair guy and see what he might offer as a solution.

There are applications that might do the recovery as well. I'm crossing my fingers that someone might have a recommendation for you. Good Luck!

I use a external hard drive and do a regular backup of my photo additions. I also have an archive of CD's that I maintain on a yearly basis.

I good techie can usually recover the data. It could be as simple as the HD cable coming loose or the HD controller. Either of those is not too bad.
If you are at all adventuresome, you could check the cable yourself.
UNPLUG the computer.
Make sure you ground yourself (touch something metal to get rid of static elec)
Open the case
Look for the cable from the HD
Check the other end of the cable to make sure it's securely seated.
That's the cheapest and easiest first step. Beyond that, let a techie handle it (or any 10 year old - they seem to understand these things  )

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
