Building your own computer?

Do people even build their own computers any more? Back in the day, you want a computer, you built it to the specs you wanted. I was just in electronics store yesterday looking at empty computer case shells and internals and it got me thinking about building a new computer.

It's been a long time, but I think I can build a awesome machine and have it cost less than the same performance with a cookie cutter computer (HP, DELL, etc.)?

So who built their own computer?

My son does it all the time. He loves it and builds it to match the usage.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

My husband and I we used to do it all the time. We have found, especially for what I want, it's cheaper to buy the whole computer, instead of building it. Just recently our media center died, so hubby ended up buying everything to rebuild it.

At this point, I don't care if we buy or build ourselves. As long as I get what I want. :)

Done it many times. The two windows computers we have at home are home built.

I build mine. In fact, I put together a shopping guide of sorts not too long ago describing the stuff I look for when I do a build.

Mine is a home built one as well. I love it! What I really want to do now is build one as small as I can (and still have it be powerful and useful) so I can hide it away. :) But I'm not that motivated yet.

It's the best and cheapest way to get a decent machine. It's nice to have the opportunity to pick each piece that goes into the build and it allows easier ability for future upgradability depending on what motherboard you buy. Ex. if you've invested in a 1366 socket board you'll be able to update your CPU for a awhile to come, matter of fact 6-core CPU's are arriving now in this chipset. I've built all of my machines since 1999 and will never do it any other way. I can't see paying a company an over inflated amount for a computer that has their name on it.
