Not enough memory/computer

12 years 11 months ago #76667 by Wood
I found out that my computer doesn't have enough memory to support photoshop I can easily get more memory, but was looking around at computers. I noticed that you can now get a 'mini notebook' and maybe use it for photography storage and processing only. It would be great for travelling if you were shooting a lot and wanted to download to disc. But what about the small screen for editing? Knowing very little about these things, it seemed to me that the screen might be way too small for critical work. Has anybody tried one of these? What do you think?

those little netbooks dont really have the processing/memory power to handle heavy applications like photoshop and GIMP etc... Get a normal laptop with some nice amounts of ram if your gonna buy something.

I use a minimum of a 15.6 inch laptop and prefer my desktop 19 inch screen for editing work. I also would only use a portable storage drive to download/upload files when traveling then do the editing on my home computer when the trip is over. With portable drives giving 1 terabyte of storage it is now easy to store a whole vacation and have plenty of room to be certain your RAW files are there when you get home.

Have a 4GB 14in Latitude which I thought would be too small but it working for me,those notebooks won`t cut it.Plan on updating to 8gb later but 4gb is fast enough now.I uses external hard drives so the files doesn`t slow down the computer.

I bought an HP Pavilion dm4 with i5 processors and 6GB of memory. For editing I can attach a monitor and/or use the HDMI port to connect the newer TV.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

As suggested a Notebook is not designed for use as a photo editing tool although they can be great for transfering files from the camera to an external storage device when out and about if you run out of memory on the cards.

Personally would make sure you have enough cards and do the editing on a decent system at home.

I wouldnt dream of doing any editing or storing on my netbook, buy your self a good external hard drive and store most of your stuff on there.

I have a laptop a little bigger than a notebook that I use for travel. The screen really isn't big enough. I use it more to store photos than anything else. I got 5 gig of memory so that I can run Photoshop without any problems. (Because of the offer 5 gig was cheaper than 3 gig) I use it to see if there is something I want to go back and retake, but I keep all my real editing till I get home.

I also have a 3 terabyte external drive at home where I store all my photos. If you travel a lot a laptop can be a good investment. As Baydreams said you can always hook it up to a tv if you are in a hotel room if you really want to see the photos large.
