McAfee vs Nortons virus protection?

My McAfee's virus protection subscription is coming to an end soon, how is Nortons compared to this one? Better or about the same?

I have used both - one is just as good as the other but I did find that they slowed down my computers. I use neither of them now. Currently and for the last couple of years been using AVAST and have been very pleased.

I have used both also, I currently have been sticking with Norton 360 and it lets you have it on 3 computers.

I use avast! freeware version. Uses less resources that Norton. I also use Malwarebytes to screen for malware.

I have Norton and it works for me; had McAfee at work and don't notice a big difference (Norton seems better but probably because I have a better laptop!)

Forget both and look into Kasperski.

I'll never use Norton again!

Just wait .... you may already be infected. One of the fastest drowing areas for virus development is Mac, Linux and smart phones .... and they're all Linux based.

:agree: Both are resourse hogs and Avast has been a rock solid performer.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I've used both in the past, but in the last couple of years they've both been unable to protect or eliminate viruses several times. I've had better luck with Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes. That's mostly for my laptops. I keep my dedicated Photoshop/photography computer off line.

Recently I thought I had a failing hard drive. It turned out to be a squeaky fan. But in dealing with it I learned about Xxclone. With hard drives so cheap I now have complete system back-ups, and in the future if I get a particularly nasty virus I'll just take out the infected drive, and install the back-up. It takes me less time than running a virus scan. Then reformat the infected drive.

Unless you have a fresh OS on each drive, you're just removing an arm while the head is infected.

I never really understood how a virus works or can work until I took 2 semesters in network security. There is some really nasty stuff out there that will disable your antivirus and fool you into believing it's working, open ports for future attacks, turn your box into a bot .... and will never show up on Norton or Mcafee (FYI: Norton bought Mcafee a while back). Some will hide in your backup and when you need to restore, guess what .... Yup new infection. There's even viruses written specificly for USB flash drives!

Antivirus and intrusion protection can't be a single soultion ... It takes AV, firewall and Intrusion Dection software along with some knowledge and work to keep a system really 'safe' ... and even then it's only good to the next round of viruses emerge.

No matter how fast I go, there's always someone slower in front of me.

Very true. Malware and other rogues show up every day. They are getting more sinister and 'official' looking as well.
