Do you think desktop computers are going away to laptops?

Do you think we will see laptops as 100% replacement for desktop computers?

For most work, but I imagine NLE (Non-Linear Editing for movies) is going to be desktop based for awhile. It requires a whole lot of high speed drive access.

Not 100%. Not in my lifetime and I plan on living forever - so far so good!

I don't doubt desktops will end in your lifetime, chas. Maybe not ALL of them, but once we get high speed wireless access to clouds, they won't be necessary any more.

The only real advantage then will be the big screen. 17" is about as big as anyone wants to carry.

But maybe they'll come up with a "virtual" screen that pops out into thin air. Can't be that far away.

I try and cover all bases by having a tricked-up Macbook Pro plugged into a 30" Apple Cinema screen on my desk which I use with a Wacom graphics tablet. It's a great editing / design combo and when I travel or go on a shoot I unplug the laptop and take it with me!

Now are you able to have split screen on that set up?

I think Charles is right. Desktops carry lots of fast connections to drives, etc . Even when you plug your laptop into an HDTV, you can get better colour rendering on a dedicated monitor.
As for "clouds", I see two problems. 1) you have to have a cloud and connection that never slows or fails (do you trust Microsoft?) and 2) In the next ten years, sunspot and flare activity are expected to increase dramatically (normal cycle) and that could really screw up much of our wireless communication.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Hi,
Yes, split screen always on so I can have iChat, Mail, Safari (Photography Talk !) running on my laptop screen next to whatever work I'm doing on the 30".
Works brilliantly.
