Don’t feel the need for a palm hugging DSLR? Take a look at our top ten, the cameras here can easily give them a hard time. Plus they are designed to be easily hauled around wherever you go.

Samsung PL150

Price: Rs 11,990

Our favourite budget camera has a second LCD screen on the front for framing self-portraits and timed shots. But there’s more: dual image stabilisation, excellent picture quality, arty filters and friendly controls. Hard to fault, bar its use of microSD cards.

Sony DSC-HX7V

Price: Rs 15,990

A brilliant all-round snapper, this Sony does everything you’d want and does it in style. Build quality is spoton, as are its 10MP shots. The ingenious Sweep Panorama mode is its party trick, but really this is about the whole package, 1080i video and all.

Nikon P300

Price: Rs 16,950

Combining a sleek, metal-clad form with manual modes, 1080p video and outstanding picture quality at 3200 ISO (a realistic option thanks to a bright lens and dual image stabilisation), the P300 wants only for RAW shooting and friendlier controls.

Nikon S9100

Price: Rs 17,950

An 18x zoom is the headline feature here, aided by dual image stabilisation. You can get bigger zooms, but if you want something that’s compact and stylish, the idiot-proof S9100 is the way to go. Pics are sharp with vivid colours and good low-light abilities.

Panasonic Lumix FT3

Price: Rs 24,990

Our favourite rugged camera backs up its toughness with remarkable environmental awareness that includes GPS, a compass, altimeter and barometer. The FT3’s controls are glove-friendly and its pictures won’t disappoint, though the HD video might.

Canon Powershot S95

Price: Rs 26,995

A pocketable point-andshooter, the S95 delivers powerful performance, excellent image quality and professional results, and is a must for the amateur photographer with a thirst for quality.

Canon PowerShot G12

Price: Rs 31,995

Canon’s flagship enthusiast compact isn’t particularly compact in size, but it does pack in the features. There’s instant access to a full compliment of shooting controls including fully manual, a nifty optical viewfinder that’s synchronised to the zoom lens, and a flip-out LCD that allows you to shoot from awkward angles.

Rather than overpopulate the 1/1.7in CCD, Canon has sensibly stuck with 10MP, which results in less intrusive noise at higher sensitivities. The G12 can record stills as RAW files and video as 720p HD, and image quality is crisp and realistic.

Sony NEX-5K with 18-55mm lens

Price: Rs 34,990

Sony’s take on the compact, interchangeable-lens camera uses a different system to that of the Panasonic GF1 and Olympus PEN series and strips back the controls for a sleeker form. Pictures are stunning, and its sweep panoramas can be viewed in 3D. You’ll thank us later.

Panasonic Lumix LX5

Price: Rs 34,990

Like the Canon S95, the LX5 takes a smart, sleek approach to serious, no-nonsense snapping. Its Leica lens is fast and wide, but to fully appreciate that you’ll need to be shooting in RAW. Video at 720p and a generous array of controls complete a good job.

Panasonic DMC-GF1

Price: Rs 44,219

Half compact, half SLR, the GF1 uses the same Micro Four Thirds system as the Olympus PEN EP-1 and its successor, the EP-2. The PEN wins on style but otherwise the GF1 sweeps the board. A highly capable and desirable cam for serious shooters.
