Dynamic range of a camera

2 years 3 months ago #703915 by Mare_333
Hi all, hope everyone had nice Thanksgiving. I am looking to buy a full frame camera and I got a question about dynamic range. I understand what it is - the range from blackest black to whitest white. And I understand that different cameras have different dynamic range depending on the sensor and other factors (as compared to the actual dynamic range of the subject). My question is - shouldn't then dynamic range of a given camera be shown as one of the specifications for that camera. I've looked on several major photo gear stores and I don't see anything about dynamic range in the specifications. Is it just me or is it really the case? Thanks for your help.

I think it is though it is not always a selling point… like "economy".

Great for a small car, a family car… but the muscle car owner won't
give any consideration to that feature.

Though DR being among the ultimate desirable features of my ca-
meras, it has severe drawbacks when it come to selling points. Like
  • more difficult to explain than just "great colours"
  • will require more capacity hardware to store larger files etc.

Light is free… capturing it is not!
