Why do companies stop making older cameras

Why does Nikon, Canon etc.. stop making the older cameras? They make new cameras, new design, new models etc.. But why not just take like the Nikon D50 and just give it an upgrade. But still call it Nikon D50. I'm sure people will buy the upgrade just as much as they buy the newer different model.

I think you are asking the wrong people.

Marketing. In a way, each series of new cameras is an "upgrade" to an existing model. There are rare exceptions, but the "revised old" model would cost as much as the "new" model.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Usually because the old models are obsolete in terms of technology, but also because space is at a premium and the old production lines are ripped out to make way for new ones.
Plus you'd have to pay people to assemble the components for what is essentially a niche market.
How many people actually bought a new film camera this year?
Nikon still actually make one (the F6) unlike Canon.

If you want an obsolete model go look for one on EBay - there are plenty to be found...
I sourced a near-mint condition Nikon F3 for £200 last year. Cost me another £20 for new seals and a new all-matte focussing screen (which I prefer to the split-screen/fresnel arrangement on the standard screen)...

In ye olde days of filme, it wasn't so bad - Nikon averaged a new Pro camera every eight to ten years or so - now with technology improving digital capture so fast, we get 'upgraded' bodies every three or four years or so.

It's not just cameras. When I was a kid I used to build plastic kit model airplanes. Lots of shops sold them and most had a full range of stuff. A couple of years ago I decided it'd be fun to start bulding them again in my spare time, now that I'm fast approaching advanced decrepitude. Hardly any high street shops sell these any more and even the mail-order firms mostly deal on back-order.
Hasegawa - one of the better manufacturers now only makes a limited production run of selected models each year - I've now been waiting 18 months for them to do another run of the 1:48 Messerschmitt Bf-109-G-6 so I can complete my Messerschmitt staffel...

This is the correct answer.
Every new model requires a total retooling.
