I run a backup program from Acronis that copies changes to my files every hour to a separate hard drive in my basement. I let the program wait an hour so that I can delete rubbish images after import and save a little bit of space on the backup drive.

I used to keep a separate copy on DVDs, but that is getting harder to do, with the size and number of images I have.

Always! Best tool now is to use a RAID for backup. Google search for NAS (Network Area Server). They aren't real expensive.

I back up before I format the cards. Then every so often, I back up to a second HD that gets stored in a fireproof safe.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I back up to an external drive when I add shots.

Looks like I have some home work this weekend. Thanks everyone. Now have any of you tried any of those online storage services?

I backup both of my HDD to external drives nightly.. looking at a RAID system down the road..
From what I've read about the online backup services, I believe they could get expensive and cumbersome given the size of RAW, PSD, TIF files and the bandwidth and time needed for transfers.. They're great for small businesses, home offices, and personal use..

I leave the images on the card even after I copy them to my hard disk drive. They will stay there until the hard drive gets backed up to a second HDD. Which is then stored in a firesafe in another room. I do my final backup on a more or less weekly basis.

It's Network Area Storage and most of the cheaper ones are RAID 0 or RAID 1 with their limitations. RAID 5 is still a bit pricey but definately the way to go.

I don't back up my pics to a hard drive unless they're 'in process'. I keep 2 copies on DL DVD's (8 Gb), 1 raw as shot and one finished. Hard drives fail, DVD's will last about 50 yrs.

No matter how fast I go, there's always someone slower in front of me.
