A short and simple article I wrote about using unsharp masking to adjust local contrast and sharpening.

Nice job. i've used unsharp mask for many years for contrast enhancement. I demonstrated this to a photo club once and I had to laugh from all the gasps when I told them the settings I would be using. They were then stunned with the result it gave. Great demonstration.

Awesome Henry. Sharpening is so important and you made it easy for all.

:goodpost: Matt,.Is there an advanntage to this method ( which I like and useat times) over using the High Pass Filter, with the "blend if" option on a layer set to Overlay. You can then use the High Pass again on the same layer to sharpen edges at a smaller radius setting

Cool. I always flop around a lot trying to find the best radius and threshold.

I just always found high pass to seem strong and crude compared to USM. I'm sure some of it has to do with that USM was a familiar darkroom technique to me, and high pass something new. I've not used nor explored high pass very much.

I actually only wrote this article up because I've got a buddy still using CS2. I used to use this method, but these days 99% of the time I'm satisfied with the sharpening in ACR (which I understand to be based on this method, Jeff Schewe, Bruce Frasier, etc...).

I also usually prefer USM for Photoshop sharpening, and use High Pass sometimes as output sharpening.:goodpost:
