Whoops - do you ever do this?

2nd time I've done this just this week alone! 

Man, if this screws up your cards, I'm doomed!

I always forget to safely remove my cards.

Looks more scary than it actually is!
We get this in a power cut as well.
Having said that, it is to be avoided so try to get into the habit of ejecting all devices before removing them and only have them connected for the time required to upload / download data and backup often as an extra precaution!

If all you are doing is reading a media card, then this won't really cause a problem. I don't know if FAT/FAT32 records the last access time (like on Unix or linux) but that would be about the only thing that would change, and if you remove a card the non-official way it really should not be a problem, ever.
