Any recommendations for workflow guides.

Hello,

I am looking for guides that will improve my workflow and sort of train my eye, so as to identify particular elements of a photo that needs to be edited. I for most part understand what slides control each element of a photo. I just don't know how to see them. I feel like it doesn't matter knowing how to edit something, when I am not seeing why I need to edit it. Any recommendations to improve in this area?

Shoot: protect the whites at all cost.

PP: get the technical rendition right
and only then apply artistic intent.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Identifying particular elements of a photo begins in frame with the camera, at the time of the shoot. Editing enhances the particular elements you have already chosen in the composition for example to emphasize leading lines, layers, colour, texture, space, pattern, depth of field etc.. Some people have a natural talent in this department and know instinctively how to convey a particular scene to the viewer while many take art classes to learn how to compose a scene for the best impact.
The image as Nikon shooter has mentioned should be ideally exposed to get the very best from an editing workflow.
I use the workflow from Cambridge in Colour: www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/digi...editing-workflow.htm
The only thing i leave out is in step 3, i don´t apply any corrective sharpening with noise reduction. Sharpening in any form including clarity is the very last process after resizing for output. Best thing is to save an un-sharpened master copy, then it can be resized either for web or different print sizes as output sharpening varies considerably with size/resolution.
