Color space for optimal web uploads

4 years 9 months ago #650543 by vanderloo5
Need help here.
I primarily edit photos in ProPhoto rgb with my main objective being editing for print and high res sharing/selling.
I know the best color profile for web uploads is supposed to be srgb. But when I get my photos exactly as I want them in ProPhoto rgb, then go to shrink and save as .jpg for web uploads, (social media, etc.) when I assign the new srgb profile my photos look like hell.
So, I know the answer is not to edit everything once for the web, and once for print. Aside from shrinking file size and saving as .jpg. for the web.
So what is the ultimate workflow for having srgb conversions look good with out a total re-edit?
Thank You

I edit in ProPhoto also and convert to sRGB for the jpgs I share online. I see no difference in the images on screen when I do this. I'm not sure why you are seeing a lot of difference. Can you explain what looks different instead of they just "look like hell." Are they desaturated, have color shifts or what?

A) you don't have a choice for JPGs shared online. The only color profile possible is sRGB. Everything else will be wrong.

2) +1 on the above: what are you doing? I (and everyone that uses LR) edit in ProPhotoRGB by default, and have no problems exporting files as JPG or PNG with sRGB.

We also don't know if you're using a monitor with a wider gamut.

That said, it's important to remember that not every color can be represented in sRGB, so there is going to be some loss. But it's usually quite minor for most of us.

Perhaps an image, by way of example?

Well, First of all thank you for your responses.
I think my issue was that since I haven't uploaded anything to the web for awhile, I was now going into edit, in photoshop, and choosing assign profile. And the profile I was changing to wasn't the true srgb. It was actually srgb IEC61966-2.1
Now remembering that all I need to do is export as .jpg and click the box to convert to srgb. Now I'm getting better results.

sRGB was ok some years back.

I only use RGB 1998 for the web and prints. I also use
ProPhoto BGB in RAW development on my station.

Light is free… capturing it is not!
