Which version of photoshop to purchase and where is the best place to learn how to use it?

13 years 2 months ago #30003 by alley
Hi everyone. I was just wondering if anyone could guide me in a good direction here. I do google searches and I am overwhelmed with pages of hits. First of all which version is the best to buy? I mean there is photoshop, elements, lightroom.... Is there one that does it all? After the purchase where is the best place to master all it has to offer? I currently am doing a trial with the elements and just do basic stuff, but don't know which one I should commit to for purchase. Any help would be appreciated cause I'm a little overwhelmed.

Photoshop ELements is good to start with it contains most of the functins of the full version of Photoshop. You can use plugins with it and actions if that is your thing. Once you master it you can move up to Lightroom for processing but you still may need another program. photshop may be the next step but you may find the Elements 9 will suit almost everything you do. and it is only 80.00 at Costco. Compared to 299. fro lightroom and 800+ for photoshop Cs

Your question should be more...which adobe photo editing software to purchase. As there is Adobe Elements. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom.

Elements is good to get your hands wet.
All 3 softwares will do everything you want to edit the photo.
Photoshop is the cats ass for editing. Photoshop can do alot.
However Lightroom is a new product within the last couple of years and is specifically made for photographers. Lightroom is easier to learn then Photoshop, it's also alot cheaper.

Stick with elements until you learned it. After that, decide where you want to go... Lightoom is only for editing photos. Photoshop you can edit photos and create new graphics etc.. Like I said, photoshop is the cats ass. lol

This.

Learn the way layers work, if you get confused, watch the movie Iron Man.

In the cave when he's drawing the schematics for the suit, and it's on pieces, he has to put all the pictures together and flatten them to see it all, that's how layers works.

Hi,

it all depends on how much you already know about photography...Lightroom is good for editing your RAWs, it does most of the stuff you want and is pretty good for fine-tuning your images. I have never worked with elements, I use CS4 because I make a lot of composites and collages. I personally don´t like the Camera Raw Plug In so much (in Photoshop), I rather use Lightroom to process Raw files. If you get started and wanna do just photography, go for Lightroom. If you wanna edit your photos more (layers etc...) go for Elements. That will give you enough to learn! Then, once you reach the limits of Elements, consider buying Photoshop. Maybe you can even find an older version (CS2, CS3) for less money, even those older versions are so complex, it will take you quite a while to get the hang of everything.

Hope that makes sense!
