publishing a book

Is a 15MB file large enough to produce quality images for publishing in coffee table style books?

Way more than enough, yes. But, you need to contact the publisher to find out their requirements too.

I save my prints in 1600x1200 JPEG format and that's good enough for 8x10 prints

publisher's requirements are very different. Some publishers have a minimum of a 30mb file size at 300dpi. This is not the same as printing your home pictures on a inkjet.

To make sure you meet minimum requirements, shoot in RAW and convert to TIF. It will give you the best results anyway. Jpeg's are not really suitable for quality publications.

I am just saying that your 15mb file is plenty big enough.

If you are printing your own book (thru mpix or Mt Publisher, etc.) you are essentially printing a series of photos. If the book you order is 8x10, you are having that size print made. I did an 11x14 with jpegs from my 8 mp XT and they worked very well.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I think that jpeg is definitely enough, if your book isn´t gonna be larger than A4. Just make sure they are at least 300dpi! I had A3 prints done which I shot with my old Lumix FZ50 (10 Mpix) and they looked great! Anything bigger won´t work, but that was surprisingly well done!

Even now, my Canon 500D with 15.1 Mpix produced good shots in A0 (60x90 cm), but that was from a RAW transformed into a TIFF.

Don´t worry, for a "small" book there is no problem with jpeg!
