Lightroom 3 for photographers

I don't have a lot of extra money sitting around so I need to make the best decisions I can. I was told that Lightroom will do most of the editing that I would need plus help manage my photos. Is this true or will I need Photoshop?

Lightroom will do about 80% of what you need, if you are into some hard core editing you might want to look at getting Photoshop down the line.

Go to www.adobe.com and download a trial version. LR is $300 PS is about $800.
Also go to www.corel.com and get a trial download of Paintshop Photo Pro X3. It does quite a bit of what PS does including layers. Cost is $80. Downside is that there are far fewer books and resources. I just started using it and bought "Picture Yourself Learning Pro X3" from Amazon and it looks pretty powerful.

LR and PS are THE software but there are options if you don't have the cash. Fixed income can be a beach.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Actually Lightroom will do 100% of what one needs. Lightroom is made for photographers. Yes, having photoshop helps if one needs/wants too add layers, but for editing...levels, curves, cloning spots out, gradient etc.. plus making a slideshow and web gallery, lightroom is fine.

IMO, lightroom is great if one uses it only to "edit" the photo. Enhance it. Not photoshop it. If one wants to photoshop the image...then adobe photoshop comes into play.

Both are great photo editing softwares. In the end, no matter which one you buy, you won't regret it. Lightroom is alot easier to understand how to use. Photoshop is so much more then a simple edit.

Lightroom 3 is a great program, there are even some really good DVD workshops out there to teach you how to use.
