I was bored..

..and couldn't find much on TV this afternoon.. I bought these little antique bottles yesterday so I could shoot some still life flower arrangements but haven't got any flowers yet.. So why not play with food coloring in water? Afterward I messed around with different texture images, blend modes, opacity, and layer order to come up with these...

I realize this grungy textured look isn't for everyone but I'd appreciate some C&C.....

Tell me more about the grunge textures. Also when is the Ninja going to return your red food coloring?

I like this, the first one I enjoy the most. Did you use a flash?

I wondered where the red went... for some reason the box had a yellow, blue, and 2 greens (1 of them empty).. sounds like Ninja and Photobod collaborated on the switcheroo...

The texture stuff... I've been collecting a series of different texture images - gravel, dirt, rust, bark, peeling paint, graffiti, whatever.. if I see something interesting I shoot it.. I've also downloaded a bunch from various websites - Google "free photoshop textures" and you'll find thousands..
So, what I do is open my base image (in this case the bottle/ink pic).. and then I open 1 or more of the texture images that might look good with it.. You have to pay attention to image size and resolution so they match or can be sized accordingly.. Then I just play with layer order, opacity, and the blend mode of each layer.. there is no right or wrong way and I experiment quite a bit to get what I want.. The top image above uses the following 3 images..

Blend Mode - Multiply, Opacity 100%

Blend Mode - Hard Light, Opacity 60%

Blend Mode - Normal, Opacity 70%

Just re-arranging the layer order and changing blend modes will give entirely different looks.. it's a lot of fun to play with.. I've also worked with layer masks and dodging/burning on some of my stuff.. Get yourself some texture files and have a go...

Great shots ... and technique.

Sure, practice makes perfect but, unless you learn from your mistakes, you are only perfecting your ability to fail.

Being a "clean" nut, I like the individual textures better than combining them . . .
