I like your style! Something I would do...

... if I were there, with THAT camera, and THAT lens, at THAT time. ;)

It's more than a stairway. When we look we see the people who lived there, the history of the house. Without including a person, it has humanity in it.

Also, great perspective control. You have an eye for that too.

Bravo!

What did you do in post? I just went over the entire image with a fine tooth comb in Ps, looking at the tonal range. It's dead on perfect!

The brightest spot is a sparkle on the doorknob (in the back) and it is just the right amount of bright. The shadows are perfect too. You absolutely nailed it in post.

If you were my student, you'd get a gold star for the editing.

Do you edit by the numbers, or just that lucky (again)?

Matthew

Just lucky I guess. I started by de-saturating the image some, I added a toned overlay fill layer at a low capacity set to color blend. I then added a texture overlay. There are some other steps but they are normal steps like dodging and burning and the like. I just start working on images and they kind of tell me what they want or need if that makes any sense. I don't have a set formula and I don't usually start out with a pre-concieved idea on these type images. Not much of an explanation I guess, but that's about all I can tell you about how I do things.

If you've ever read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (was popular years ago) he talks about two types of mechanics. One has his tools all lined up with silhouettes behind. The other has tools everywhere, and can just grab what he needs, when he needs it.

You're the second kind. No method, but a great sense of what is needed and when.

It really has a perfect tonal range. It would print beautifully.

Matthew

This line is excellent... "they kind of tell me what they want ". There is no better way than that!

This image does print well. It doesn't smack you in the face with color even though it is a color image. I think for the most part, people use way too much saturation. It all depends on the subject. A macro of a colorful bee on a colorful flower needs the saturation, while a lot of other images don't need it and some look better with a little desaturation.
