Dr Martin Luther King Monument

I know we have to suffer with earthquakes, but one of the benefits of living in Northern Virginia is the access to the monuments in Washington DC, so I got up early to line up to see the new Martin Luther King monument by the tidal basin. Pretty impressive, and all the better once they take down the barriers after it is officially opened by the President next week. I'll then try for a sunrise shot I think!

If you are interested, the full set of images can be found on my main photo site .

I heard the original artist speak, who got fired. He knew Dr. King, and said he was a humble man, and wouldn't appreciate such audacity.

But still, it is nice to honor such a man. His "Dream" speech is taught in most schools now.

Matthew :)

BTW It's just a coincidence we have the same initials. Not intentional.

Oh, yes - hadn't noticed that!

Here is another close-up:

Better. Has but two colors and simplicity. You see the work in it.

PS I still occasionally get calls from preachers, wanting me to advertise in their church newsletters. And I proudly claim ownership of many roads and bridges throughout the U.S. j/k. ;)

How funny - in fact, I wonder if I saw you there this morning - this is MLK III. Third person from the left. Any resemblance?

Did you ask him to pose in front? That would be an AP level photo!

No - I was there before it opened and he was getting a VIP tour. Just happened to be in the right place. I've uploaded to Alamy (which is more of a mid stock agency). I must admit I'm not sure how to get into the news photo sites.

You're going in the right direction. And nothing in photography happens overnight. Like they say in Hollywood, every overnight success took 15 years to create.

There was an opportunity in front of you, and you might have had to "break a rule" to get the shot - i.e. left your group for a sec. "Excuse me, I need to use the bathroom. Be right back." Good journalism sometimes requires little white lies.

But, it was there for the taking. Once you have it in camera, all you have to do is contact them (AP or Getty) with what you have. That was an important (and once only) moment in history.

See the Nat Geo vid that recently got bumped.

Thanks for the advice. I found an interesting site called Demotix which I checked out via some other sites and appears to be a site for getting your image in front of news and other media. They keep 50% of the earnings, but I'll see how it goes. The article about MLK visiting the monument is now online ...
