Former East-German Border Crossing

These Photos show the former east german border checkpoint Marienborn / Helmstedt.
On your way from West-Germany to Berlin you had to cross this checkpoint. It is now a memorial and museum. But every visit is step back into the time of cold war.

No these signs were only in West-Berlin. You had to pass this checkpoint when you started your Berlin-trip in West-Germany as you had to cross the "German Democratic Republic". There was another East-German checkpoint before you entered West-Berlin. And there were these signs.

"See You" was for real? In English?

I assumed they added that after.

Of course, Matthew, you´re right. It is only a joke now. But the impression of this soldier with binoculars is real as they were standing in these watch-towers to observe the traffic.
Crazy, wasn´t it!?

I was in Switzerland watching ZDF when it came down. Asked my then girlfriend (a Swiss) to pack her bags. She thought it wouldn't be safe, and refused to go. That's why I don't have wall pics.

But I saw the change happen live, and felt the people seeking out real rock 'n roll (Jon Bon Jovi was on sale), and bananas.

It was something. :)

For those wondering, the BDR (West) and the DDR (East) both spoke German. The main difference was BDR spoke English as a 2nd language, and in the DDR they spoke Russian. The two cultures were miles apart, and yet only few feet away from each other.

Although it was 20 years ago when both german countries reunited it is still unbelievable for me to imagine there were 2 Germanies for over 40 years :(

The same philosophical schism exists here within our political parties. They just aren't split by land -- East and West. We're all intermingled.

If you get a few hardcore voters drinking and talking politics, you can see the wall being built right in front of you.

Then I'll play some Bon Jovi on my iPod...

WANT-ED!! Dead or alive.

While they gave Ronald credit, Bon Jovi on sale made it happen. I saw it.

;)

:agree: I know what you mean Matthew. The wall is still there in many German´s heads in both east and west even after 20 years of reunification. I wonder if this will ever change.

You saw Never Forget being paraded for the opening of the memorial at the World Trade Center. We have a memorial at Pearl Harbor too.

Crikey, I have travelled through those checkpoints many times. Brings back fond memories of my old Army days in the late eighties. Good shots, they haven't changed much apart from lack of Russian soldiers

You may have played Bon Jovi, but on the wall when it came down, they were playing David Hasselhof - He was/is a huge star in Germany as a singer

After all the convo, I forgot to comment on the work. Very nice, helge. Good perspective and framing.

Amazing stuff, didn't know that checkpoint would still be there. I have a cousin whose grandfather and mine were brothers and somehow she located my family some years ago and came to the US for a visit (unfortunately since lost touch). My family was from Hamelin and our cousin brought us info.from the church there that traced our family back to around the 1500s.

I bought a vintage Voigtlander recently and it says West Germany - a little reminder from the past and astounding to think about how relatively recently communism still existed in Europe. Interesting being a hockey fan that when we had a minor league team here how many players were from Russia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, etc. Many didn't speak English as it was their first experience in the US. Sadly one of our former players just died in that plane accident in Yaroslavl.

Your photos that you've been posting are really good too, I'll be interested to keep seeing more of your work. I like shooting B&W film myself.
