Nevermind I worked it out by goggling. It's to make the bridges last longer.

This was taken in Amish country in Pennsylvania. Driving horse drawn buggies over ice covered wooden bridges is extremely unsafe.
They now serve a purpose to these folks who shun automation and are a great tourist draw.

That's a nice photo John. There's a covered bridge near where I live that was built in the 1860's, no longer in use but preserved and listed on the National Register of Historical Places. They're kind of interesting to see and walk across.

There are a couple in Maine (I think they're on film) but you usually have to head west to find a lot of them. I do have some shots of some to the east in New Brunswick.
