Hi Ned
Thanks for your explanation - the first image makes more sense now.

I assumed you were doing a series on churches. I was a bit confused. So, yes the architects have achieved their purpose. It certainly looks like a hotel or convention centre etc.

Yes, true heresy (although unintentional). I probably offended the architects and those with religious views by calling a hotel a church - ouch!!

"Modern" and "bland" were meant in context to the "old' Abbey, which I feel has a much more interesting appeal. I could spend a week (or longer) at the Abbey photographing it. Whilst I could also spend a week at the hotel, I don't think the images would be as interesting - maybe more entertaining :beerbang:  :catfight:

I feel the hotel would benefit from more dramatic lighting, maybe a twilight shoot, which would allow us to "see inside" and also enhance the sky. As more people tend to go to a hotel after work or for dinner, enjoyment etc, an image taken at that time of day may have more subconscious appeal and recognition. Also a wider view to put the building in context to its surroundings.

I look forward to seeing more.

Paul

John, thanks for commenting. I don't like either of the 2 subsequent posts. Merely illustrating the "exploration" that most agree is a fundamental approach to a site like this and possibly broader photography. In truth I find these 2 shots embarrassingly weak considering the power of the subjects. The landscapy type shot is part of my "style" so to speak as it has a contextual element of the building and its surroundings as it is now. It works if people say hey that place looks interesting. I lack the skill for true architectural shots and I know its a broad generalisation but in my experience only seasoned photographers and engineers can give the clarity and interpretation architecture deserves.
Cheers

Paul, I'm difficult to follow and at best vague. You were misled with the hotel by my description and trusting me calling it a church.

Everything you comment resonates and it strikes me that viewers are led by titles, text, experience etc. and that expectation during viewing is an amalgam.

Your week at the hotel I'm sure would throw up some interesting work, inside it has art deco furnishing, fittings etc. The basis of which i believe is geometry and symmetry and in stark contrast with the ornate architecture of the abbey. You're right the cramped snapshot I took doesn't either give context or detail about the architecture, and that considered lighting would help.
Thanks for taking time to view and comment it helps my enjoyment of photography.
