Subconscious at Work

12 years 3 weeks ago #217077 by nedward50
In Norfolk about 3 years ago I took the attached. When it was developed I couldn't help but feel uneasy, that it wasn't my idea in the first place.

On research I found out Edwin Smith did the original and my subconscious must have copied it at the time of shooting. Like most of you I must have looked at thousands of image created by famous photographers and can't remember them all. On further looking at Smiths work and my own I have found more images that are very similar. Also I reckon that we all carry "templates" that we use when on site, either drawn from our own or others image experience, a sort of repertoire that we apply.

I'm not pretending mine is anything like as good as Smiths by the way.

Look at what Smiths work is worth via this link www.chrisbeetlesfinephotographs.com/gall...am-norfolk-1970.html

cheers
Ned

I think you have a fine image under all aspects, and being inspired by other work is no flaw, in my view. Some think that nothing can be created in art that is independent of what has already been created. The alternative is to put a moustache on a urinal...

Tipofmy - thank you, a "stolen" idea but good practice methinks.
Cheers

Kelly, I was up the road a ways taking some shots of fields and wind pumps. When I returned to the car, parked on a narrow Norfolk road, there was a furniture wagon delivering to the only house on the lane. I wus boxed in and couldn't get out till they had unloaded, so I went for another stroll, behind a hedge was the ploughed field.
Thanks for taking time to view and comment.
Regards

I think it's a good photo, interesting use of line in the composition. It's similar to the one you posted, yet very different, you can tell it's a different place and done by a different photographer. I imagine other people have seen fields that have been plowed and photographed or have done a drawing or painting. I don't think it's that unusual, having the same idea or subject but photographing it your own way.

Replace the word "stolen" with "inspired" and you'll have it right! It's no different than a musician learning a song from their favorite artist. I can't tell you how many hours I spent trying to emulate Neil Peart of Rush. I'm taking the same approach for photography. I've tried many shots that already exist in the name of practice.

Nice shot by the way.
