A beautiful place but I found it hard to get good images. It may have been partially due to it being 104 degrees that day.

Looks like you did pretty well in spite of the heat... :)

It is what it is.

Know what you mean. When I was there I kept wishing that I was half way up those canyon walls, for a better perspective.

Exactly Kelly. The valley is so narrow and vertical, it's very hard to get a decent shot. It would take a bit of hiking to do that and I only went up for the day from Vegas. I think Bryce would be easier.

Bryce is a WHOLE LOT easier! Not only is the overall height of the terrain a lot less, there is also an excellent trail system for easy access to it all. But Bryce is not a very practical target for a Vegas visitor. For Bryce you need to figure on overnighting somewhere in southern Utah, or the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

I was actually headed to "Valley of Fire" but I saw how close Zion was so I kept going. I probably should have stuck to my original plan because I never made it to "Valley of Fire".

I've never seen the Valley of Fire, Zion is a heck of a magnet!

Valley of Fire is amazing. Unfortunately the only time I went there was a while ago when I didn't really know much about exposure so I took a bunch of photos in the midday sun and couldn't figure out why they looked so bad...not to mention I was still only shooting JPEG so there wasn't much that could be done with them. But I'd definitely recommend it for a good photo outing!

Oh and nice job on this, especially considering the location and conditions you were up against.

The trick for shooting mid day at Zion is to go into the canyons and shoot in the shade, using the glowing light reflecting from sunlit canyon walls as your light source. Otherwise, if you're trying to do big landscape images, "magic hour" in the early morning and evening are your friends.

Jack Dykinga and I are teaching a photo workshop in Zion this October. This will be our third or fourth Zion workshop together:
