Known to be Michelangelo's favorite ancient sculpture, the Belvedere Torso, marble copy of a bronze by Apollonios, is thought to have inspired the figure of Abraham in the Sistine ceiling. Comments always welcome!

Can't help to wonder the history of this statue.  For example the legs are chopped off and head.  What was the story behind that?

This was dug up during excavations in a Roman Villa. Rome was overrun and sacked many times by invading "barbarians" (Visigoths, Huns...)in the latter part of the empire and the Dark Ages, and much was looted or destroyed. That the genitals were damaged is likely due to religious zealots. Michelangelo saw it, as well as other Greek sculptures, and brought that style and powerful realism to the art of the Renaissance. And here's where Bernini took it:

Darn Visigoths. Its a shame other cultures don't respect the art of the conquered.
Example, the Sphinx in Egypt's nose was shot of by Napoleon's occupying forces, what a waste!

Why so serious?

And let's not forget the Romans' burning of the library at Alexandria! We still haven't caught up to the lost knowledge.
